Student learning communities, Grades 3 to 6
The need
A partner school wanted to build student-centred learning communities in Grades 3 to 6, where students have more voice, agency, and ownership of their learning. Some elements were already in place, but there was no shared model.
What we did
- Ran a two-day, in-person workshop series for school leaders and classroom teachers.
- With leaders: built a shared understanding of the model, aligned it with the school's strategic plan, and designed supporting structures and schedules.
- With teachers: practical frameworks and tools, strategies for student agency and peer collaboration, and time to plan together.
- Stayed on site after the workshops to coach early practice: short practice sessions in real classrooms, classroom observations, and facilitated reflection with teachers.
What changed
Leaders and teachers agreed on the key systems and routines, identified priority areas for further support, and left with a phased implementation plan for the following year.
